Rapaki Bay from Lyttelton 2024

Total distance: 13.5km
Time: 4.5 hours, including refreshment breaks

Sixteen walkers (with an equal number of males and females) gathered at Lyttelton for an enjoyable walk to Te Rāpaki-o-Te Rakiwhakaputa (Rāpaki) and back in pleasant overcast conditions. We followed the Te Ana trail through the industrial areas of the port and the marina (including the recently opened art installation) to Naval Point.  From there we followed the Coastal path, making a short detour to view the remains of the gun emplacements at Fort Erskine.  We had morning tea at Corsair Bay then continued to Cass Bay.  From Cass Bay we climbed the short, but steep new Pony Point track then headed down Governors Bay Road to Rāpaki Beach for lunch.
After lunch we went into the Rāpaki church grounds to view the “Remembering Parihaka” memorial, then to the Gallipoli Jetty and on past the Rāpaki Marae to Governors Bay Road and up to Pony Point before descending into Cass Bay using the new alternate route past the memorial plantings, then back to Lyttleton via the way we came, thankful that the forecast showers didn’t eventuate.
