A sunny Thursday made for ideal conditions for our walk from the Estuary to the city centre along the Te Ara Ōtākaro Avon River Trail. The 14km shared cycling/walking trail follows the Avon Ōtākaro River through the residential red zone almost all the way.
Nineteen walkers set off along the stop bank from the Pages Road Bridge with the snow capped Southern Alps in the distance. Bird life on the river was abundant and there were many cyclists enjoying the trail on such a lovely day as well. We had morning tea beside the new Avondale Footbridge, before continuing on through the rowing complex at Kerrs Reach and past two more new footbridges across the river.
Half the group opted to have an early lunch at the very nice area near Gayhurst Road, with the remaining walkers continuing towards the city to have their lunch on the river bank near Fitzgerald Avenue. Nearing the city we passed many landmarks including the Margaret Mahy playground; Ōtākaro Food Forest; Edmonds Band Rotunda; Town Hall with the Ferrier Fountain and Te Pai finally reaching the bus exchange to board the no 5 bus back to our cars at the start of the walk.
Très beau !
