This week’s walk was a new one for the group with 25 very willing walkers meeting up at the Christchurch Adventure Park (CAP) on a chilly morning to walk the walking tracks within and outside the park. We initially walked the nature trail behind the cafe, a flattish walk surrounded by large pine trees that survived the 2017 fires within the park and crossing a number of cycle trails. Signage indicating wildlife within the trees was on display as well as some timber sculptures.

The morning tea stop was in the cafe area and some walkers enjoyed a coffee within the cafe. Here we met up with a new member Stephen who had been left behind at the stadium. After morning tea we started on the uphill climb to the chairlift top station, a steep climb within a replanted pine forest that had been destroyed in the 2017 fire. The growth of the replanted trees was quite staggering for five years growth. Initially the track was very zig zagged until it plateaued out halfway up that gave us all a breather, but this was short lived as there is a steep climb to where the track joined up with Worsley Spur access road. Lunch was held at this point prior to the steep climb to the chairlift or to the Summit Road.

After lunch the group broke up into three. One group returned to the carpark by the track they had walked, another group went directly to the chairlift and the remaining 13  walked to the Summit Road and continued on to Trig V on the Crater Rim Walkway. There were great views of Lyttelton Harbour and Mt Herbert at this location as it was a clear, calm, fine and a  warmish day. This group returned to the chairlift top station by the same track and all had a free ride back down to the carpark.

All in all I believe everyone enjoyed the new experience as many did not know what facilities there are at the Adventure Park. Hoping some will enjoy a zip line ride  with children and grandchildren in the future.

Some statistics: 15.25kms that included 2.5kms of chairlift ride, and 712 metres of climb for those who went to Trig V, but a maximum elevation of 487m.

I think this is a walk to be put on the programme for future years but modified for length.
