Rapaki Track, Crater Rim, Bridle Path to Lyttelton 2023

Leaders, report and photos: Heather and Robin
Total distance: approx 11km

From our meeting point at the Scout Den in Centaurus Road, our 21 walkers headed up the hill  towards the Rapaki Track. Not long after the end of the sealed road we came to the start of the new walking and cycling tracks that headed to the left into the Montgomery Reserve. We headed up the  Kowhai Track which  zig zags its way above the Rapaki Track onto the Montgomery Reserve. This section of the track was very greasy after recent wet weather, but was soon followed by  farmland, with wonderful vistas across  Ferrymead, Pegasus Bay and the city. We had morning tea on a rocky outcrop before rejoining the Rapaki Track for the last section to the Summit Road.

We then followed the Crater Rim Track past Witch Hill, and the Tors with a stop at a memorial seat along the way. The weather was cool, overcast,  a light Easterly, with misty clouds coming and going over the city and up the harbour –  but no rain.

Our lunch stop overlooked Corsair Bay before we went down the Bridle Path to Lyttelton. There we boarded the 28 bus,  getting off at Opawa for the short walk along the Heathcote River through Hansen Park and the King George Reserve back to the cars at the Scout Den.
