Mt Vernon Valley Track to the Tors 2023

Leaders, photos and report: Heather and Robin
Total distance: 11.8km
Total elevation gained: 550m

Thirteen walkers left the Mt Vernon car park well rugged up to tackle the Valley Track in overcast conditions. After recent rain the track was very muddy and there was plenty of water in the nearby stream making for a tricky crossing to access Rapaki Track for our morning tea stop. And although the sun shone for most of the rest of our walk, the southerly wind was very strong as we walked along the Crater Rim Track towards the Tors.

We opted to have our lunch in the shelter of Castle Rock with many choosing to walk on the Summit Road back to Mt Vernon before our descent to the car park on the Mt Vernon Farm Track.

Seeing “The Tors” in your title I was intrigued especially within a mountainous country. “Tors”, here in the SW of the UK are “rock capped hills up to 600m”. Checking NZ mapping and finding your area/route/s. I must say Impressive effort, and rewarding, and I guess spectacular views.
